Groß Vs Tavernier: The Better FPL Pick
Groß vs Tavernier: this one isn't close
My numbers have Pascal Groß down for roughly 61 points over the next six gameweeks. Marcus Tavernier? Around 34. That's not a coin flip — that's a 26-point gap between two midfielders separated by just £0.4m, and the cheaper one wins.
Groß at £5.7m is quietly one of the best-value midfielders in the game right now, and my pick of the two by a distance. He's likely to be good for a haul most weeks — call it a solid 8-10 point average across this stretch — and he's the sort of player who can go big when Brighton click. The fixtures help enormously: SUN (A), CRY (H), BRE (H) and HUL (A) are all games Brighton should be attacking, and even the LIV (A) and MCI (A) trips in the middle don't dent the overall picture enough to matter. About 2 in 10 managers already own him, so he's not a secret — but he's not fully template yet either. There's still time to get in before everyone else does.
Tavernier at £6.1m is the more expensive player for barely more than half the return. His fixtures look decent on paper — SUN (H), LEE (H), IPS (H's cousin, sorry, IPS (A)) and NFO (H) are all winnable for Bournemouth — but my numbers just don't see him converting that into points at anything like Groß's rate. Hardly anyone owns him, fewer than 1 in 10, and there's a reason: he's usually good for 5-6 on a decent week, and that's not enough at his price when a cheaper man is doing double.
The honest caveat on Groß: he's a midfielder whose value leans on consistency rather than explosive weeks, so if you're chasing a one-week captaincy punt, he's not that. And those back-to-back trips to Anfield and the Etihad in the middle of the run could produce a blank or two. But over six gameweeks, the maths is overwhelming.
If you're weighing these two up, stop weighing. Buy Groß, save the £0.4m, and leave Tavernier alone.
