Tottenham Hotspur FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Tottenham Hotspur FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 10 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Spurs, right now, are a defence wearing a football club. Our model ranks them 19th of 20 for attack — and with a run of fixtures that only gets harder for goalscoring — while the back line sits seventh-meanest in the league with a genuinely kind run for clean sheets. So the question of whether to buy into Tottenham has…

Look at the run: Everton, Aston Villa and Coventry all come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the next six, with Crystal Palace after that. Man United and Chelsea away are the two you'd sweat, but four decent shout-outs for a shutout in six is more than most defences priced under £5.0m can offer.

Which brings us to the value. Van Hecke at £4.9m is the pick of the page — nailed, starting every week so far, and our model has him as the best points-per-pound route into this defence. About 1 in 10 managers have cottoned on, so he's not yet template. Van de Ven is the same clean-sheet story a shade dearer and owned by almost nobody, if you fancy being early. Kinsky at £4.5m is the budget keeper answer a lot of people are already sitting on — nearly 2 in 10 own him, and rightly.

Porro is the interesting one. He's on free-kicks and shares corners, which is usually where a full-back earns his premium — but when your attack ranks 19th, set-piece delivery is a promise, not a payout. Our model prefers Van Hecke at 60p cheaper, and so do I. Senesi, note, is the one defender here who isn't nailed — one start, priced above the players actually playing. Avoid.

The honest caveat: we're three games in. Small sample, and if Spurs start shipping goals at home to Everton the whole thesis wobbles. The midfield trio — Tonali, Bentancur, Tel — are all starting but none projects enough to justify a slot when the attack is this blunt. Leave them.

The call: buy Van Hecke at £4.9m as your set-and-forget cheap defender for the next six, with Kinsky the keeper if you need one. Ignore everything Spurs from midfield forwards.
