Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 9 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Szoboszlai takes everything at Liverpool now — penalties, free kicks, corners, the lot. When one player hoovers up every dead ball at a big club, that's where the value question starts and, frankly, where it ends. Because the wider picture here is not romantic. Our model has Liverpool as a mid-table attack — ninth in the league — and a…

One squad, picked before a ball was kicked and run for six gameweeks on three transfers — no hits taken. Scored on FPL’s own results.

So if you're taking one, take the right one. Szoboszlai at £7.0m is the pick, and it's not because he'll outscore everyone every week — Isak actually edges him for raw points over the six. It's because at that price you're buying a player who starts every match and gets the ball in every dangerous situation, twice a game, guaranteed. Roughly 4 in 10 managers already have him, so he's hardly a secret, but the template exists for a reason. Isak at £9.1m is a fine player priced for the weeks he goes big, and against City and Arsenal those weeks may not arrive. Gakpo and Wirtz are decent but you're paying £7m+ for third and fourth on the pecking order of a ninth-ranked attack.

The defence, I'd leave alone entirely. Virgil at £6.5m and Alisson at £5.5m are buying clean sheets from a back line our model ranks twelfth, facing three of the league's better attacks in six weeks. Kerkez and Jacquet do start — which is the first question I always ask — but starting isn't enough when the clean sheets aren't coming. There's cheaper defending elsewhere with kinder opponents.

What changes the call? If Liverpool keep Fulham and Bournemouth quiet in the first two, the defensive picture softens and Jacquet at £5.0m becomes interesting as an enabler. Until then:

Buy Szoboszlai if you want a Liverpool player. One is plenty. Everyone else — hold your money.
