B.Fernandes Vs Palmer: The Better FPL Pick
Fernandes or Palmer? My numbers say the gap is two points — and £2.3m
Here's the head-to-head in a nutshell: over the next six gameweeks, my projections have Bruno Fernandes on roughly 41 points and Cole Palmer on roughly 39. Two points apart. The price gap? £2.3m. That's the whole debate right there.
Start with Fernandes at £12.0m. He's the safer, steadier pick of the two — on penalties, on set pieces, on everything United create — and about 4 in 10 managers already own him, so he's firmly in the template. His run of fixtures is genuinely favourable: FUL (A), TOT (H), LEE (A), BOU (H), CHE (A), AVL (H). Plenty of games there where United should create enough for him to return, and my numbers expect him to keep ticking along at a solid return most weeks with the odd big haul mixed in.
Palmer at £9.7m is the value play. His run is arguably even kinder — BRE (A), BOU (H), EVE (A), TOT (H), MUN (H), SUN (A) — and only about 3 in 10 managers own him, so he still carries a bit of differential appeal against the crowd. On his day he can go absolutely massive, and Bournemouth and Sunderland in particular look like games where Chelsea should score freely.
So why does my model still put Fernandes first? Consistency. Palmer's projected total leans more heavily on a couple of standout fixtures, while Fernandes clears a decent score more reliably week to week. The honest caveat on Bruno is the price — £12.0m is a big chunk of budget for a midfielder, and if United have a flat afternoon at Fulham or Chelsea, that's an expensive blank. The caveat on Palmer is the flip side: more variance, and Chelsea's attack shares its goals around more than United's does.
If you already own one of them, hold — there's no case for swapping either way for a two-point gap.
If you're buying fresh and the money's there, my pick is Fernandes. He's the one my numbers rank first, he's the more dependable scorer of the pair, and that fixture run is good enough to make him a captaincy option in the home games against Spurs and Bournemouth. Buy Fernandes; only take Palmer if that £2.3m is the difference between an upgrade elsewhere and a hit.
