Arsenal FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Arsenal FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 3 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

Arsenal: the value is at the back, and it isn't close

The sharpest thing our model says about Arsenal right now is this: the meanest defence in the league is about to hit a run of fixtures made for clean sheets — while the attack sits mid-pack, tenth of twenty, staring at a tougher road. If you're buying into Arsenal over the next six, you're buying the back end. The front end is priced like it's 2023.

Look at the run after Chelsea at home first up: Sunderland away, Brighton away, Leeds at home, Forest away, Everton at home. Get past Stamford Bridge's neighbours visiting the Emirates and that's five games where a shutout is the expectation, not the hope. For a defence our numbers rank first in the league, that's the whole pitch.

So who carries it? The model's answer is Gabriel, and I don't argue with £8.0m for a nailed centre-back who attacks Rice's corners and free-kicks at the other end. Clean sheet points most weeks, plus a genuine chance of a goal on top — that's how a defender goes big. Only about 1 in 4 own him, which is thin for a player this reliable.

The dry-pragmatist route is Ben White. Same clean sheets, £2.5m cheaper, nailed, and hardly anyone has him — under 1 in 10. If Gabriel breaks your budget, White buys you the same defence and funds a premium elsewhere. That's what an enabler is supposed to do. Calafiori is fine too, but 4 in 10 already own him, so he wins you nothing on the field the template hasn't already banked.

The caveat is the other end. Saka is the model's favourite attacker — penalties, set pieces, nailed, barely 1 in 10 owned — but £9.5m into a mid-table attack facing a tough run is paying for the good weeks and eating the quiet ones. He can go massive on his day; the fixtures say his day may be a few weeks off. Ødegaard at £6.6m looks cheap but the model rates him below Rice for a reason — I'd leave both for now.

The call: buy the Arsenal defence, not the Arsenal attack. Gabriel if the budget stretches; White if it doesn't. Do it before the Chelsea game so you're set for the five that follow.
