FPL Chips: When To Play Your Wildcard, Bench Boost And Triple Captain — 5 Sep

Triple Captain: The Route Runs Through Old Trafford in GW6

The highest ground on our map for the Triple Captain isn't this week's derby — it's Bruno Fernandes at home to Spurs in Gameweek 6, where our projections make him worth around 30 points with the armband tripled. That's the peak on this stretch of the route, and it's not especially close.

The temptation right now is obvious. Haaland goes to Old Trafford in Gameweek 4, and our model puts him at roughly 26 as a triple captain. That's a serious number, and just about everyone owns him, so playing it feels safe. But look at the terrain: it's an away derby, and the whole point of this chip is a top premium at home to opposition he should carve up, with 80-plus minutes near-guaranteed. Fernandes at Old Trafford against Spurs ticks every box on that checklist — he's on everything for United, penalties included, he doesn't get rested, and the home fixture is the kind of climate this chip was built for.

The other names on the shortlist don't change the plan. Semenyo projects around 16 as a triple captain this week, Isak about the same at home to Fulham in the same window as the Liverpool run — both fine captains in the ordinary sense, neither remotely a chip play.

The honest caveat: two gameweeks is a long time in this game. Fernandes could pick up a knock, United's form could turn the fixture sour, and holding a chip always carries the risk of the window closing before you reach it. But the first-half deadline isn't until Gameweek 19 — there is no expiry pressure forcing your hand now, and burning your best chip on a second-best window because it's the nearest one is how routes go wrong. Haaland away at United is a captain pick, not a Triple Captain pick. The gap between 26 and 30 points is a free transfer's worth of value you'd be handing back for impatience.

The call: hold the Triple Captain through Gameweek 4 and 5, and play it on Fernandes at home to Tottenham in Gameweek 6. Captain Haaland normally this week if you own him — that's the sensible path through the derby — but keep the chip in your pocket. The high ground is two weeks away. Walk to it.
