FPL Chips: When To Play Your Wildcard, Bench Boost And Triple Captain — 15 Sep

This is the GW5 edition, kept for the record. The always-current version lives at fantasyfootballiq.app/fpl-wildcard/.

Triple Captain: The Route Runs Through GW7

The answer first: Haaland, at home to Ipswich, Gameweek 7. Our projections put his captain haul with the chip at roughly 24 points — and on the map of the first half of the season, that's the highest ground we can see.

Here's the terrain. The Triple Captain chip has one job: multiply a monster score, not a decent one. That means you want three things lined up at once — a top premium, a home fixture against weak opposition, and near-certainty he plays 80-plus minutes. Haaland at the Etihad against Ipswich clears all three checkpoints. This is exactly the kind of fixture where he goes massive on his day, and his day arrives more often than anyone else's in the game.

The other side of the ledger, honestly stated. Twenty-four points is the expected haul, not a guarantee — even the best captains blank sometimes, and City's rotation under a manager managing a squad that deep is the one patch of fog on this route. If Haaland were rested or hooked at 60 minutes, you'd have burned the chip on a middling score. That risk never fully disappears; it's simply lower here than almost anywhere else on the calendar.

Why not wait? Because the first-half chips expire at the Gameweek 19 deadline, and hoarding is how good chips die in the bag. We're at Gameweek 5 now. That gives you two weeks to make sure Haaland is in your squad and the armband path is clear — not a scramble, a planned approach. If a better window existed between now and 19, we'd name it. Our model doesn't see one: no other premium pairs this fixture quality with this level of minutes security in the window that remains.

The route, then, is short and clear. Hold the chip through Gameweeks 5 and 6. If Haaland is fit and starting when the Gameweek 7 deadline arrives, play the Triple Captain on him against Ipswich. If — and only if — injury news changes the picture that week, you fall back and reassess, because a chip on a doubt is a chip wasted.

The call: Triple Captain Haaland, Gameweek 7, IPS (H). Mark it on the map now and walk straight there.
