FPL Gameweek 4 Captaincy: Who To Captain

This is the GW4 edition, kept for the record. The always-current version lives at fantasyfootballiq.app/fpl-captain-picks/.

Captaincy Court, GW4: Two Armbands, One Derby

The Manchester derby has swallowed the captaincy debate whole. Our model has Bruno Fernandes and Erling Haaland dead level — both projected around 7.7 points, both with roughly a one-in-three shot at going massive — with Palmer (HUL (H)) and Isak (FUL (H)) a notch behind at a one-in-four shot apiece. So it's a straight fight: two players, one match, opposite ends of the pitch.

Haulage King says: Bruno Fernandes, and I'm not blinking. MCI (H) sounds scary until you remember what Fernandes is at Old Trafford in a derby — penalties, free kicks, every attacking touch United produce runs through him. Our numbers back the noise: his big week lands around 14 points, the joint-highest on the shortlist, and he matches Haaland's one-in-three haul odds at £12.0m instead of £15.5m. Here's the kicker: only about 4 in 10 managers own Bruno against 7 in 10 on Haaland. Captain Haaland and haul, you tread water with the crowd. Captain Bruno and haul, you leapfrog most of your mini-league in one afternoon. Derbies are chaos, chaos means penalties and set pieces, and nobody feasts on chaos like Fernandes. Armband on Bruno.

Cheapy says: Haaland, obviously. I've listened to the ceiling sermon and the projections say the two are identical — 7.7 apiece, same one-in-three haul odds, same 14-point big week. So if the upside is a wash, you take the sturdier week, and that's Haaland every time: nailed minutes, the most reliable goal threat in the game, and MUN (A) is a fixture he's built a career on ruining. Yes, the quiet week for both is an ugly one point — derbies can strangle anyone — but Haaland only needs one chance to bail you out, while Bruno needs United to actually function. And the 7-in-10 ownership isn't a bug, it's insurance: when the most-owned player in the game hauls without your armband, that's the week that sinks a season. Captain Haaland, sleep fine.

The verdict line: This is genuinely a coin flip on the numbers, so pick by your league position. Chasing a gap? Bruno is the cheaper, less-owned swing at the same ceiling. Protecting a lead? Haaland is the template shield. If you just want the straightest answer: most managers should follow Cheapy and captain Haaland — but if you need a big week, Bruno is a proper punch, not a prayer.
