FPL Chip Strategy 2026/27: When to Play Bench Boost, Triple Captain, Wildcard and Free Hit
The short version — you get four chips and you get each of them twice: once in each half of the season. The first set has to be used by Gameweek 19; a fresh set opens from Gameweek 20. Play the Wildcard to rebuild a squad that has drifted, the Free Hit to rescue a single week your squad cannot cover, the Bench Boost when your bench is playing too, and the Triple Captain on a player you trust in the week you think suits him best. Only one chip can be played in a gameweek, and an unused first-half chip is lost.
The rules, in plain English
- Four chips: Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain.
- Two of each: one for the first half (to Gameweek 19) and one for the second half (Gameweek 20 to 38).
- One chip a gameweek. You cannot stack two in the same week.
- Use them or lose them: a first-half chip left unplayed at the Gameweek 19 deadline does not carry into the second half.
- Wildcard and Free Hit open from Gameweek 2. Gameweek 1 is squad setup, with free changes until the first deadline.
Wildcard: when to play it
Play it when the squad you have is no longer the squad you would build. The Wildcard gives you unlimited free transfers for one gameweek with no points hit, and the team you build is the one you keep. That makes it the chip for a proper reset: several players injured or losing their places, prices that have moved against you, or a clear swing in fixtures you want to ride for weeks.
What it is not is a reflex. One free transfer a week fixes a small problem more cheaply than a chip does, and a Wildcard played early is a Wildcard you do not have when the squad really breaks. This week's wildcard call and planner →
Free Hit: when to play it
Treat it as a rescue chip. The Free Hit also gives unlimited transfers for one gameweek, but your old squad comes back the week after, so nothing you do with it lasts. That suits one situation: a week when too many of your starters have no match and patching the gaps with transfers would cost you points hits.
A run of difficult fixtures is not a Free Hit, because it lasts longer than a week: that is a transfer or a Wildcard problem. Do not spend it on your bench either, since a bench player who does not play costs you nothing. Later in the season the fixture list changes shape, which is why the second Free Hit is worth holding. If the first half is nearly over and the first one is still unused, a modest gain beats losing it. This week's best Free Hit team →
Bench Boost: when to play it
Play it when the whole fifteen are going to play. The Bench Boost adds your bench's points to the week's score, so it is worth exactly what your four substitutes score. Cheap players who start every week are worth more here than expensive ones who sit.
The thing most managers get wrong is looking at the bench they own today. A bench only scores on the one week you boost it, so pick the week first and build towards it: spend the transfers beforehand on a goalkeeper and defenders who are nailed on to play, with good fixtures that week. The bench you can reach is the one that counts. The best cheap bench players →
Triple Captain: when to play it
Put it on a player who is certain to play, in the week you think suits him best. The armband normally doubles your captain's points; the Triple Captain counts them three times, so it adds one more copy of his score. The best weeks are a home match against a weak side for a player who plays the full ninety.
The real decision is the week, not the player. When two weeks look about the same, say within a point of each other, we call it an even choice, and we say what it is a choice between: playing it now, when you know he is fit, or waiting for a later week when you cannot know what will happen. We do not mark the later week down to force an answer. The best Triple Captain pick → · This week's captain picks →
Planning all eight chips
Because only one chip can be played in a gameweek, plan the four chips of each half together rather one at a time: give each its best week, then let the others fit around it. Every chip is worth playing, and a chip left in a half's last gameweek is a chip wasted. Three habits help: keep the Free Hit for a week you genuinely cannot field a side, build the bench towards your Bench Boost week in the weeks before it, and decide the Triple Captain week by its fixture and your trust that the player will start, not by the calendar.

The questions people ask
How many chips do you get in FPL this season?
Eight, in two sets of four. You get one Wildcard, one Free Hit, one Bench Boost and one Triple Captain in the first half of the season, and the same four again in the second half. The first set has to be used by Gameweek 19 or it is lost; the second set opens from Gameweek 20.
Can you play two chips in the same gameweek?
No. One chip a gameweek, so a Bench Boost week and a Triple Captain week have to be different weeks.
When should I use my Bench Boost?
In a week when all fifteen of your players are likely to play and the bench has good fixtures. A bench only scores on the one week you boost it, so the bench you can build with a few transfers beforehand matters more than the one you own today.
When is the best time to play Triple Captain?
On a player who is certain to play, at home to a weak side, in the week you think he has his best fixture. When two weeks look nearly equal it is an even choice: this week you know he is fit, and later you cannot know what will happen to him.
Should I use the Wildcard or the Free Hit?
Wildcard if the squad has drifted and you want the rebuilt one to stay: unlimited transfers and the new squad is yours for good. Free Hit if the problem lasts one week only, because the squad you had comes back the week after.
Do unused chips carry over?
Not from one half to the other. A chip you have not played by the Gameweek 19 deadline is gone, and the second-half set is separate. Inside a half, a chip you do not play simply stays available until the half ends.
