Semenyo Vs Gibbs-White: The Better FPL Pick

This is from Gameweek 1, kept for the record. Everything from Gameweek 1 → · The latest from The Brief →

The call — Two midfielders, the same very kind run of fixtures, and my numbers say the higher-projected one isn't the better buy. Gibbs-White comes out of my model at around 35 points over the next six gameweeks — nearly six a week — while Semenyo sits a shade lower at about 31. Read only that line and you'd sign the Forest man…

One squad, picked before a ball was kicked and run for six gameweeks on three transfers — no hits taken. Scored on FPL’s own results.

Here's the case. Semenyo at £8.5m is the attacking piece at Manchester City with the clearest route to returns, and City's run is about as gentle as it gets: Coventry at home, then trips to Manchester United and a home game against Sunderland, before Liverpool away is the one genuinely tough afternoon, followed by Ipswich at home and Villa away. In a side that racks up chances like City do, he's the sort of player who ticks along at five-plus most weeks and can go massive when everything clicks. About 2 in 10 managers already have him — popular, but not yet everywhere.

Gibbs-White is the tidier, steadier option. £7.9m, hardly anyone owns him — roughly 1 in 10 — and his fixtures are just as friendly: Spurs at home, Villa away, Coventry at home, Palace away, then Arsenal at home and Ipswich away. My numbers actually give him the higher week-to-week points, and if you're hunting a cheap differential who quietly delivers, he's a genuinely good one. The honest caveat on Semenyo is exactly that: he costs £0.6m more and projects slightly fewer total points over the window.

But the reason he still sits top of my list is the size of his good weeks. Gibbs-White's returns are steady; Semenyo's come with the kind of upside that wins you a rank swing — and with Liverpool away the only ugly fixture in six, the platform is there.

If the budget is tight, Gibbs-White won't let you down. But if you can stretch to it, buy Semenyo — he's my pick of the two.
