Manchester United FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid
Man United: buy the attack, ignore everything behind it
United sit fourth in our prediction for attack and fifteenth for defence, and the fixtures pull in the same direction — a very kind run for the forwards, a rough one for clean sheets. That's the whole story of this club in one line: everything worth paying for happens in the final third.
So the question isn't whether to buy in — it's through whom, and the table above already tells you our order. Fernandes leads it, and there's no clever way round him. He's nailed, he's on penalties, free kicks and corners, and he clears a solid haul most weeks with the odd monster when everything runs through him — which it does. The catch is the obvious one: he's £12.0m, and nearly 5 in 10 managers already own him. You're not gaining ground on anyone by buying him. You're just avoiding losing it.
The value pick is Mbeumo. Two-thirds of Fernandes' output at two-thirds of the price, sharing set-piece duty, starting every week — that's the profile I actually like. About 3 in 10 own him, so there's still something in it. Cunha is the same price and the genuine differential — hardly anyone has him, under 1 in 10 — but our model ranks him a clear third among the mids for a reason. If you're buying one United attacker, it's Mbeumo. If you're buying two, then Fernandes comes first.
Now the honest bit. The run reads EVE (A), MCI (H), FUL (A), TOT (H), LEE (A), BOU (H) — plenty to attack there, but City and Spurs at home are proper tests, so don't expect six straight hauls. And the defence: Maguire, Shaw, Dalot and Lammens are all cheap and all starting, which normally has me reaching for my wallet. Not here. A team ranked fifteenth for keeping the ball out, facing a tough clean-sheet run, is not where your £4.5-5.0m goes — a cheap defender who plays every week but never keeps a clean sheet isn't an enabler, he's just a slow leak. Tielemans at £6.0m is the quiet curiosity — starts every week, third on penalties, owned by nobody — but he's a watchlist name, not a transfer.
The call: buy into United through the midfield — Mbeumo if you want value, Fernandes if you want the safe points — and leave the defence on the shelf. The attack is real. The back line is priced cheap because it deserves to be.
