Manchester City FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Manchester City FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 12 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — City's fixture run is a clean-sheet printing press — and the value is at the wrong end of the pitch from where everyone's looking. Our model has City with a very kind run for shutouts over the next six: Sunderland, Ipswich and Brighton at the Etihad, Villa, Forest and one genuinely nasty trip to Anfield. One tough game in six.…

One squad, picked before a ball was kicked and run for six gameweeks on three transfers — no hits taken. Scored on FPL’s own results.

Everyone will buy Haaland — seven in 10 already have — and fair enough. He's nailed, on penalties, and projected for the sort of six weeks that justifies £15.5m. He's not a call, he's the template. The actual decision on this page is the back line, and it's Guéhi who tops it. Nailed, £6.0m, owned by fewer than two in 10, and projected to out-score midfielders costing two million more. Gvardiol does much the same job for £5.6m if the budget's tight, and Donnarumma at £5.5m is the quiet steal — barely anyone owns him and a keeper behind a top-five defence with these opponents doesn't blank often.

Now the romance check. Cherki is the shiny one — free kicks, corners, £7.8m, three in 10 own him — and he's started two of three. That's the profile of a player who gets subbed on 60 or benched outright, and you're paying for his best week, not his usual one. If you want a City midfielder who actually plays, Anderson at £6.3m is nailed, on corners, and owned by practically nobody. Foden's cheap at £7.0m but he's in the same rotation queue as Cherki. Semenyo's the pick of the mids if you're spending £8.4m — nailed and on the penalty list behind Haaland.

What changes the call? If Cherki starts three straight, revisit him. Until then, don't pay midfield money for two starts in three.

The call: buy into City through the defence — Guéhi first, Gvardiol or Donnarumma if the budget says so — and let the savings fund Haaland. Leave Cherki on someone else's bench.
