Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 1 October 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Liverpool's value is at the wrong end — and that's fine, buy the right end. Here's the thing our model keeps spitting out about Liverpool: the attack ranks a very ordinary 11th in the league right now, while the defence sits fifth meanest. One end is priced for romance, the other is actually earning. And with MCI (H), BRE (A)…

So forget the shiny stuff. The buys here are defenders and a keeper.

Virgil is the pick of the whole page — top of the back line, starts every week, never gets hooked on 60, and only about 1.5 in 10 managers own him. He's exactly what a £6.5m defender should be: a man who plays 90 minutes and keeps clean sheets for a side ranked fifth for shutting teams out. Alisson is the quiet steal — £5.5m, hardly anyone has him (well under 1 in 10), and he projects nearly as well as midfielders costing two million more. Jacquet at £5.0m is the enabler answer: he's actually starting, which is the only question that matters at that price.

If you must have an attacking route in, it's Szoboszlai and nobody else. He's on penalties, free kicks AND corners — when a team's open-play threat goes mid-table, the man holding the ball at every dead ball is where the points hide. He's the template route too, about 3 in 10 own him, so he's a cover pick as much as a punt. Wirtz is the romance option at £7.3m — shares the set pieces, barely owned — but the model ranks him below Szoboszlai for a reason, and I don't pay extra to find out why.

The caveat is honest enough: that fixture list has City, Arsenal and United in it, and "favourable for clean sheets" can age badly against sides like those. If Liverpool start leaking, the whole case wobbles.

But the call is plain. Buy Virgil. If you've a bench slot to fund a premium elsewhere, Alisson does the same job for a pound less. Leave the Liverpool attack to managers who enjoy disappointment.
