Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Liverpool FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 22 August 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Liverpool's opening six: NEW (A), NFO (H), IPS (A), FUL (H), BOU (A), MCI (H) — and by our projections that's one of the kindest attacking runs in the league. Newcastle away first up is the toughest of the lot, and Manchester City lurking at GW6 spoils the party, but the middle four — Forest, Ipswich, Fulham, Bournemouth — is…

So which Liverpool asset? The one our model likes most is the unglamorous answer: Szoboszlai at £7.0m. He's projected around 23-24 points over the six, he plays every week, and about 4 in 10 managers already have him — the template pick for a reason. He won't win you the season, but he won't cost you it either, and I've made a career of liking players like that.

Virgil at £6.5m is the quiet value here — projected roughly 25 points across the run, owned by about 2 in 10, and the only Liverpool defender you'd trust for 90 minutes every single week. If the clean sheets land better than the fixtures suggest, he pays out twice.

Isak at £9.0m carries the biggest projected haul of the lot (25 points or so) and the biggest upside on a good day — he's the one who goes massive when Liverpool put four past someone. Under 2 in 10 own him, so he's the swing pick. The catch is the price: £9.0m buys a lot of reliable midfielder elsewhere.

Wirtz (£7.5m) and Gakpo (£7.0m) sit further down our pecking order, and that's deliberate — Liverpool's attack has more mouths than minutes, and someone's coming off on 60 most weeks. Gakpo at 3.5% owned is a fun punt; it's still a punt.

The honest caveat: the run opens at St James' Park and closes with City at Anfield, so don't expect six straight hauls. GW2 to GW5 is where the money is.

The call: buy Szoboszlai as your safe Liverpool route in, and if you've got the funds and the stomach, Isak is the double-up. Leave Wirtz and Gakpo for braver managers than me.
