FPL Budget Picks: The Best MID Under £6.5

This is the version of FPL Budget Picks: The Best MID Under £6.5 from 7 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Budget mids under £6.5m: who actually plays The most useful number in this whole bracket belongs to a 34-year-old who's never been fashionable: Pascal Groß, £5.5m, projects for nearly 38 points over the next six gameweeks. That's better than 6 a week from a player who costs less than most bench fodder — and he starts every game Brighton play.…

The fixtures are only average — COV (A) first up — but Groß doesn't need easy games to return. He's the definition of what this column values: nailed minutes, steady output, funds a premium elsewhere. Boring is a compliment at £5.5m.

The rest of the bracket, one line each, in our order of preference:

  • Tavernier (BOU, £6.0m) — starts, average fixtures, BRE (H) next, good for 5+ a week. Barely anyone owns him (fewer than 1 in 10 by a distance). The best alternative here.
  • Dewsbury-Hall (EVE, £6.5m) — decent player, but *not an expected starter*, and Everton's run is tough starting TOT (A). Minutes are the whole game at this price. Pass.
  • Diego Gomez (BHA, £5.0m) — the cheap Brighton route if Groß money is spoken for. Starts, projects well for a fiver.
  • Le Fée and Xhaka (SUN, £5.9m/£5.5m) — both start, both face a brutal run beginning ARS (H). Wrong time.
  • Schade (BRE, £6.0m) — starts, but tough fixtures. Fine, not exciting.
  • Anderson and Ndiaye (MCI, £6.4m/£5.9m) — lovely fixtures after MUN (A), and both expected to start. City rotation is the tax you pay; go in with eyes open.
  • Elanga (NEW, £6.1m) — favourable run, LEE (A) first. Solid, about 1 in 10 own him.
  • Stach (LEE, £6.0m) — starts, but NEW (H) kicks off a rough patch.
  • Slater (HUL, £4.5m) — the true enabler price, and he does start, but CHE (A) opens a very tough run. He's a fifth midfielder, not a plan.

The romance picks in this bracket are the City pair — and someone's coming off on 60 there most weeks. The value pick is the one who plays 90 every time.

The call: buy Groß at £5.5m. If you want a differential with the same reliability, Tavernier at £6.0m is the alternative. Everyone else is a compromise.
