The call — Budget midfielders under £6.5m: who actually plays, and who's actually worth it Two Brighton midfielders top our list, and neither costs more than £5.5m. That's the whole story of this price bracket right now: Groß and Diego Gomez both start, both face a very kind run beginning with Leeds at home, and our model has each of them good for…

Quick tour of the bracket, one line each:

Groß (BHA, £5.5m) — nailed starter, lovely fixtures, roughly 35 points projected over six. About 1.5 in 10 own him. The safe money.

Diego Gomez (BHA, £5.0m) — same fixtures, marginally higher projection, half a million cheaper, and hardly anyone has him (under 1 in 10). The value play.

Anderson (MCI, £6.4m) — starts, kind run beginning Coventry at home, ~29 points projected. Solid, but you're paying near the ceiling of the bracket.

Elanga (NEW, £6.1m) — starter, very nice fixtures starting Bournemouth at home, ~26 points. Fine, not special at the price.

Dewsbury-Hall (EVE, £6.5m) — plays every week, but United at home kicks off a tough run. Pass for now.

M.Sangaré (BRE, £5.7m) — popular (over 1 in 10) and starts, but average fixtures and a modest projection. Owned more than he's earned.

Xhaka (SUN, £5.5m) — never misses a minute, which I respect, but Sunderland's run is brutal. Not now.

Schade (BRE, £6.0m), Tavernier (BOU, £6.0m), Stach (LEE, £6.0m) — all start, all around 21–23 points, all facing average-to-tough runs. The £6.0m tier is where value goes to die this month.

E.Le Fée (SUN, £5.9m) — unproven at this level and the fixtures are horrible. No.

Slater (HUL, £4.5m) — the cheapest starter here, but very tough fixtures and no track record. Bench fodder that plays, nothing more.

The romance-free read: 59 midfielders qualify under £6.5m and only two clear the bar properly, and they share a dressing room. Groß is the proven, set-piece-adjacent starter who never blanks his minutes — he's the top pick. But Gomez projects fractionally higher, costs £5.0m, and about 1 in 20 managers own him. If your budget's tight, that half-million funds real upgrades elsewhere.

The call: buy Groß if you want certainty, buy Gomez if you want the £5.0m version of the same fixtures. Either way, get a Brighton midfielder in before Leeds (H). I'm taking Gomez — same run, cheaper ticket.
