FPL Budget Picks: The Best MID Under £9.0

This is the version of FPL Budget Picks: The Best MID Under £9.0 from 28 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Midfielders under £9.0m: who's actually worth the money Nobody in this bracket buys you more certainty per pound than Mateo Kovačić-style solidity — sorry, force of habit. The name at the top of our list is Morgan Rogers, £7.7m at Chelsea, and about 4 in 10 of you already own him. Our projections have him good for roughly 6 points…

One squad, picked before a ball was kicked and run for six gameweeks on three transfers — no hits taken. Scored on FPL’s own results.

The value play, though, is Pascal Groß at £5.8m. Our model has him outscoring everything else in the bracket over the next six — comfortably the best points-per-million on the board — and Brighton's run is genuinely soft, starting SUN (A). About 1 in 4 managers have him. He's not a haul merchant; he's the bloke who never blanks, plays 90 every week, and funds a premium elsewhere. That's the whole job description at £5.8m.

Quick sweep of the rest, one line each:

  • Cherki (MCI, £7.8m) — real talent, favourable run after LIV (A), but it's City, and someone always comes off on 60.
  • Semenyo (MCI, £8.4m) — same story, dearer price, fewer owners (~1 in 7). Wait for proof of minutes.
  • Tavernier (BOU, £6.1m) — steady, average fixtures, CHE (A) up first. Fine, not exciting.
  • Schade (BRE, £6.2m) — decent output but a tough run starting AVL (A). Pass for now.
  • Mbeumo (MUN, £7.9m) — proven, TOT (H) next, but middling fixtures and £7.9m buys better here.
  • Cunha (MUN, £7.9m) — same price, ranked lower, hardly owned (~1 in 20). Not yet.
  • Barnes (NEW, £6.1m) — the sneaky one: very kind fixtures from COV (A), barely anyone has him (~1 in 20). Genuine cheap punt if you need a fifth mid.
  • Szoboszlai (LIV, £7.0m) — brutal run starting MCI (H). A third of you own him; our numbers say sell, not hold.
  • Gibbs-White (NFO, £8.0m) — very tough fixtures, wrong price for them.
  • Ødegaard (ARS, £6.8m) — cheap for the player, horrible run. Later, maybe.

The call: Rogers is the pick if you're spending £7.7m — proven, starts, kind fixtures. But the best pound-for-pound buy in the whole bracket is Groß at £5.8m: he plays every week, the run is soft, and he pays for your captain. Buy Groß first, Rogers second, and let everyone else's shiny picks rot on their bench.
