The call — Budget midfielders under £9.0m: one of these is not like the others Here's the number that should stop you scrolling: Groß, £5.8m, projects for more points over the next six gameweeks than anything else in this bracket — and it's not close. Our model has the Brighton man nearly doubling the return of players costing two quid more. At that…

The rest of the shortlist, in the order our model prefers them:

Rogers (CHE, £7.7m) — the template pick, about 4 in 10 own him. Favourable fixtures, Bournemouth at home next. Solid, but you're paying £1.9m more than Groß for a lower projected return. Cherki (MCI, £7.8m) — nice fixtures after Liverpool away, but City's attack is a crowded room and nobody's minutes are safe there. Mbeumo (MUN, £7.9m) — decent numbers, average fixtures, Spurs at home next. Fine, not urgent. Szoboszlai (LIV, £7.0m) — a very tough run beginning with City at home; 3 in 10 own him and I'd wager most regret it shortly. Tavernier (BOU, £6.1m) — honest mid-price option, average run, Chelsea away first. Barnes (NEW, £6.1m) — the quiet one. Very kind fixtures, Coventry away next, and hardly anyone owns him — fewer than 1 in 10. If you want a cheap differential, this is where I'd look. Gibbs-White (£8.0m) and Dewsbury-Hall (£6.6m) both face very tough runs — leave them. Schade (£6.2m), Semenyo (£8.4m) and Cunha (£7.9m) are watchlist material, nothing more.

The usual caveat: at this end of the market, minutes are everything, and none of these come with a written guarantee of ninety every week. Watch the first teamsheets before you commit a hit. A cheap midfielder who gets subbed on at 75 is a £4.5m bench body in disguise.

But the call is simple. Buy Groß. He's the best-projected player in the entire bracket at nearly the cheapest price in it, with the fixtures to match. If you already have him or want a second, Rogers is the alternative — and Barnes is the punt for the brave. Everything else here is paying more for less, which is precisely what this column exists to stop you doing.
