FPL Budget Picks: The Best MID Under £6.5
The call — Budget Midfielders Under £6.5m: One Name, Then Daylight Pascal Groß at £5.8m is projected for 64 points over the next six gameweeks. Nobody else in this bracket clears 33. That's not a shortlist — that's a verdict with eleven footnotes.

Our model has the Brighton man miles clear, and the reasons are boring in the best way: he plays every week, Brighton have a very kind run starting at Sunderland (A), and about 2-3 in 10 managers already own him. He's not a punt. He's the sensible thing you do before the punts. Roughly 10-11 points a week is what our projections say, which at £5.8m is the sort of value that funds a premium elsewhere.
The rest of the field, briefly and honestly:
- Tavernier (BOU, £6.1m) — proven, on set pieces, average fixtures, Chelsea away first. About 30 points over six. Hardly anyone owns him (~1 in 15).
- Barnes (NEW, £6.1m) — very kind run beginning at Coventry, similar projection. The eternal Newcastle question: does he stay on past the hour?
- Schade (BRE, £6.2m) — tough fixtures, Villa away next. Wait.
- Diego Gomez (BHA, £5.0m) — the value line: 32-33 projected points at five million, same lovely Brighton run. If you need a fourth or fifth midfielder who actually contributes, this is it.
- Scott (BOU, £6.1m) — decent but Tavernier is the Bournemouth pick at the same price.
- Stach (LEE, £6.0m) — Arsenal away, very tough run. No.
- Xhaka / Le Fée (SUN) — Sunderland's run is brutal, and Le Fée hasn't yet shown he's a nailed starter. Pass on both.
- Belloumi (HUL, £5.1m) — minutes not established. At this price, minutes are the whole game.
- Anderson / Ndiaye (MCI) — favourable fixtures on paper, Liverpool away in practice, and City's rotation eats budget midfielders for breakfast. Someone's coming off on 60, and it's them.
The call: buy Groß. He's the rare cheap midfielder who is also simply the best option, and the price means you're not sacrificing anything to get him. Best alternative if you're Brighton-averse: Tavernier, the reliable set-piece floor at £6.1m. And if you're building a bench that actually plays, Diego Gomez at £5.0m is the enabler of the season so far. Romance not required.
