Aston Villa FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid

This is the version of Aston Villa FPL: Who To Own, Captain And Avoid from 9 September 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Villa: the value's at the wrong end — and that's fine at £4.5m Everything worth buying at Aston Villa costs £5.9m or less, and that's the whole story. This is one of the league's bluntest attacks — 18th of 20 by our reckoning — heading into a brutal attacking run: Spurs and Newcastle away, City at home. Nobody in claret…

The answer is Michal Cash. Our model puts him top of the Villa pile despite the midfielders projecting a touch higher, and the logic is sound: he's £4.5m, he's started every game, he takes corners, and fewer than 1 in 10 managers own him. A full-back on set pieces at the bottom price band is exactly the enabler that funds a Haaland — usually good for a steady 2-3 with the odd assist week where he pays for a month. The defence is only mid-table on quality, mind, but the fixture run for clean sheets is average rather than awful — Forest, Brentford and Fulham at home are all keepable games.

If you want the Villa attack anyway, Buendía is the only route. He's on penalties, free kicks *and* corners — every dead ball goes through him — and hardly a soul owns him. At £5.9m he's a genuine punt with a real big-week button. But he's a punt into a side that doesn't score much facing fixtures that make scoring harder. Buy the theory if you like; I buy minutes.

What I wouldn't buy is Jackson at £6.5m — priced for upside this attack can't feed him, already missing starts, and ranked bottom of the list by our model for good reason. Mings has only started once, so of the three £4.5m defenders, Cash and Maatsen are the ones actually on the pitch every week.

The call: pass on the Villa attack entirely, and take Cash as your budget defender — the cheapest nailed starter with set-piece involvement on the market. If Buendía starts stacking returns off those dead balls, revisit. Until then, buy the man who plays.
