Captaincy Court, GW5: The Armband Goes to Trial

Four names on the shortlist this week: Bruno Fernandes at Fulham, Cole Palmer at Brentford, Haaland at home to Sunderland, and Gibbs-White hosting Coventry. Our projections have Bruno top of the pile at 6.5 points, Palmer just behind on 6.0 — and the two analysts can't agree on any of it.

Haulage King says: Bruno Fernandes, and it's not close. FUL (A) isn't glamorous, but look at what he offers — the best week-in, week-out return on the shortlist and a big week worth 13 points when it lands. And it lands often: roughly a one-in-four shot at a haul, the best odds of anyone here. That's the whole game with the armband — you're not captaining for a safe 5, you're captaining for the week that wins your mini-league. At £12.0m with about 4 in 10 managers owning him, he's template enough that you're not gambling alone, but the haul doubles into something serious. Palmer's a fair shout at one-in-five, but why take the second-best odds? Bruno. Armband on. Done.

Cheapy says: Haaland, obviously. Sunderland at the Etihad is the fixture you dream about, and he's the one player on this list whose minutes you never have to sweat. About 7 in 10 managers own him — captain anyone else and a bad Bruno week at Craven Cottage costs you rank against practically everyone. Yes, our numbers say his typical week is quieter than Bruno's, and his haul odds sit at roughly one-in-eight — I'm not hiding that. But the armband isn't just about chasing the moon; it's about not torching your week. One goal at home to a promoted side and he's fine. Fernandes away from home, on penalties or not, can hand you a booking and a blank. I'll take the sure thing standing 12 yards from goal.

The honest line: the numbers side with Haulage King — Bruno projects higher, hauls more often, and Fulham away doesn't scare him. Cheapy's case is really about protection: if you're defending a rank, Haaland's ownership makes him the shield. If you're chasing, it's Fernandes — and since most of us are chasing, the court rules Bruno gets the armband.
