The dull, important stuff: he starts every week, Brighton have a very kind run of fixtures starting at Sunderland away, and roughly 2.5 in 10 managers already own him. So he's not a secret. He's just correct. A near-nine-points-a-week pace from a £5.8m midfielder who never gets hooked on 60 is the entire point of this column.

Here's the rest of the bracket, in our order of preference — 59 midfielders qualified, these are the ones worth your time:

  • Tavernier (BOU, £6.1m) — starts, average fixtures, Chelsea away first. Good for 4-5 a week. Fine, not thrilling.
  • Schade (BRE, £6.2m) — starts, but a tough run beginning at Villa Park. The price doesn't buy you the fixtures.
  • Barnes (NEW, £6.1m) — starts, very kind run, Coventry away next, and hardly anyone owns him (~1 in 2 out of 10). The sneaky one on this list.
  • Scott (BOU, £6.1m) — starts, same average Bournemouth run as Tavernier, ranked below him. Buy the team-mate instead.
  • Le Fée (SUN, £5.7m) — starter, but unproven at this level and Sunderland's fixtures are brutal. Pass.
  • Diego Gomez (BHA, £5.0m) — now we're talking. Starts, proven, same lovely Brighton run as Groß, projected for 27 over six — more than anything at £6.1m and £6.2m above him — at a pound less. About 4 in 10... no, make that 4 in 100 own him. Owned by ~4 in 10 of nobody, basically.
  • Belloumi (HUL, £5.1m) — starts, but unproven and Hull's run is horrible. No.
  • Ndiaye, Anderson (MCI) — both start for now, favourable fixtures after Liverpool away, but City midfielders at this price are exactly who gets subbed off on 60. Weak foundations.
  • Xhaka (SUN, £5.5m), Stach (LEE, £6.0m) — starters both, fixtures both grim. Admire from a distance.

The call: buy Groß — it's the clearest value in the bracket and barely a decision. If the budget only stretches to £5.0m, Diego Gomez is the best enabler on the list — same fixtures, actually plays, and funds something shiny elsewhere. Everyone else here is a maybe. Those two aren't.
