This is the version of FPL Budget Picks: The Best DEF Under £6.5 from 9 October 2026, kept for the record. The picks and the numbers have moved since. The current version →

The call — Budget defenders under £6.5m: who's actually worth your money Here's the number that matters: De Cuyper, £5.0m, projected for about 31 points over the next six gameweeks. That's the best return in the whole bracket — and 75 defenders qualify at this price, so the top of the list isn't a coin flip. Let's run through it in order.

De Cuyper (BHA, £5.0m) — nailed starter, very kind fixtures starting at SUN (A), and about 3 in 10 managers already have him. The template is right for once. Buy.

Gvardiol (MCI, £5.7m) — starts every week, lovely fixtures after he survives LIV (A) first up. City's defence funds attacking returns too. Also owned by about 3 in 10.

Calafiori (ARS, £5.9m) — the most-owned name here at roughly 5 in 10, LEE (H) next. He starts, the fixtures are good, but our numbers like him less than the two above for more money. Fine to hold, not a buy.

Guéhi (MCI, £6.0m) — new City signing, expected to start, and quietly projected ahead of Calafiori. Only about 2 in 10 own him. A nice unfancied route into that defence.

Hall (NEW, £5.3m) — starts, favourable run beginning COV (A), under 2 in 10 ownership. Honest money.

Tarkowski (EVE, £6.2m) — reliable minutes, HUL (A) next, decent run. Solid, but £6.2m is the top of this bracket and others do similar for less.

Davis (IPS, £4.0m) — starts, which at £4.0m is the whole job. Tough fixtures, unproven at this level, but as a bench enabler he's exactly what the price is for.

Bogle (LEE, £4.6m) and Muharemović (LEE, £5.0m) — both expected starters with a very kind run once ARS (A) is out of the way. Bogle's the proven one; the £4.6m tag is genuinely useful.

Bobby Thomas (COV, £4.0m) — starts, kind fixtures, NEW (H) first. Unproven, but at £4.0m you're buying minutes, and he has them.

Virgil (LIV, £6.5m) — still Virgil, but MCI (H) next and the lowest projection of the proven names here at the highest price. Pass.

Vuskovic (BHA, £5.0m) — starter, same lovely Brighton run, barely owned. The cheaper way in if De Cuyper's gone, though he's less proven.

The call: De Cuyper is the buy — best projected points in the bracket at £5.0m, nailed minutes, kind fixtures. Best alternative is Gvardiol if you want the City clean sheets, or Davis at £4.0m if all you need is a bench body who actually plays. Romance costs extra. This bracket doesn't need it.
