Budget Defenders Under £6.5m: Who's Actually Worth Your Money

The best defender under £6.5m in the game right now costs £5.0m, starts every week, and only about 2–3 in 10 managers own him. That's De Cuyper, and we'll get to why in a minute.

First, the full shortlist — 82 defenders qualify at this price point, but these are the dozen our model actually rates, in order of preference:

De Cuyper (BHA, £5.0m) — nailed starter, a very kind run starting at SUN (A), and our projections have him as the top-scoring cheap defender over the next six — roughly five points a week. At £5.0m that's absurd value.

Gvardiol (MCI, £5.7m) — starts, lovely fixtures once LIV (A) is out of the way. About 2–3 in 10 own him.

Calafiori (ARS, £5.8m) — the template pick, owned by about 5 in 10. Starts, kind fixtures including LEE (H) next, but our model projects him behind cheaper options. You're paying for the badge.

Hall (NEW, £5.3m) — the quiet one. Starts every week, favourable run beginning at COV (A), projected nearly as well as anyone here, and only about 1–2 in 10 own him.

Guéhi (MCI, £6.0m) — starts, same kind City run as Gvardiol, but 30p dearer than his teammate for similar returns. Buy the cheaper one.

Tarkowski (EVE, £6.2m) — reliable as ever, decent fixtures from HUL (A), but £6.2m is premium money at this end of the table.

Bogle (LEE, £4.6m) and Muharemović (LEE, £5.0m) — both start, both get a very kind run after ARS (A). Bogle's the proven one at the lower price; take him first.

Davis (IPS, £4.0m) — starts, but unproven at this level and the fixtures are rough. Bench fodder, nothing more.

Virgil (LIV, £6.5m) — starts, obviously, but MCI (H) next and projected below players a pound cheaper. Pass.

Bobby Thomas (COV, £4.0m) and Egan (HUL, £4.1m) — genuine £4.0m-bracket starters with decent runs. If you need a fifth defender who actually plays, these are your men over any non-playing placeholder.

The call: De Cuyper is the buy — cheapest route to the best projected returns in the bracket, nailed minutes, friendly fixtures. If you already own him or want a second, Hall at £5.3m is the best alternative: same reliability, barely owned, and nobody's talking about him. Which is usually when the value's best.
