The call — Budget Defenders Under £5.0m: Who Actually Plays The whole game at this price is minutes. A £4.0m defender who starts every week funds your Haaland; a £4.5m one who gets hooked on 60 funds nothing. So here's the bracket, in order of preference, with the romance stripped out.

De Cuyper (BHA, £5.0m) is the pick and it isn't close. Nailed starter, proven at this level, and Brighton's run of fixtures is about as kind as they come — starting at Sunderland this week. Our projections have him clear of everyone else in the bracket over the next six, usually good for 5 a week with the odd attacking bonus on top. About 3 in 10 already own him. For good reason.

Davis (IPS, £4.0m) is the value play. Rock-bottom price, starts every week, and only about 1 in 10 have him. Ipswich's fixtures are tough — Fulham at home first — so temper the clean-sheet dreams, but at £4.0m you're buying a body that plays, and he's comfortably the best one going.

Bogle (LEE, £4.6m) and Muharemović (LEE, £5.0m) both start for Leeds, whose fixtures turn lovely after Arsenal away this week. Bogle's the proven one at the cheaper price; Muharemović is hardly owned (fewer than 1 in 20) if you want the quiet route in.

Quick lines on the rest: Bobby Thomas (COV, £4.0m) starts and the fixtures are kind, but Newcastle at home first and he's unproven. Egan (HUL, £4.1m) and Ajayi (HUL, £4.2m) both start with a decent run from Everton at home — fine bench fodder. Mitchell (CRY, £4.5m) is nailed but the fixtures are middling. Diop (IPS, £4.0m) starts but Davis is the better Ipswich pick at the same price. Ajer (BRE, £4.5m) is a sneaky one — proven, starting, lovely fixtures, barely owned — worth a look if Davis doesn't fit. Maguire (MUN, £4.8m) starts but you're paying £4.8m for average fixtures, which is how value dies. Vuskovic (BHA, £5.0m) starts, but at the same price De Cuyper is simply better.

The call: De Cuyper is the buy if you've got the full £5.0m — he starts, the fixtures are soft, and he's the best points-per-pound in the bracket. If you need the cheapest body that actually plays, it's Davis at £4.0m. Everything else is a compromise.
