Is It Worth Paying For An FPL Tool?

Short answer: Sometimes. FPL is free to play, and free tools cover plenty. A paid tool is worth it if it saves you time or helps with decisions you find hard, and if you can check its record first. If you only play casually, you probably don't need one.

Key takeaways

  1. Start with the free tiers; several tools offer a lot without charging anything.
  2. Pay only for a job you actually need done, like captain picks or planning transfers.
  3. Ask whether the tool publishes its record, misses included, before you hand over money.
  4. Check the billing period: some low monthly prices are billed yearly, and some are sale prices.
  5. Never give any tool your FPL password. Your team ID is enough.

Your name and your FPL team name. That is all it takes, and we will have your answer before you have finished reading this sentence.

No FPL password, ever. We only read what FPL already publishes.

The honest answer

Fantasy Premier League is free to play, and a paid tool is never required to compete. Plenty of managers do well on free information, a bit of reading and their own judgement.

What a paid tool offers is time and a second opinion. If you spend an hour each week weighing transfers and still feel unsure at the deadline, a good tool can shorten that. If you enjoy the research, or you only check in now and then, the money may not come back to you in enjoyment or in points.

When a paid tool earns its price

A tool tends to be worth it when it does a specific job you'd otherwise struggle with. These are the cases where we'd say paying makes sense:

  • You run several leagues and want a clear view of who is beating you and why.
  • You find captain and transfer decisions stressful and want a considered suggestion each week.
  • You plan chips and fixtures ahead and want a planner or projections to help.
  • You want to ask questions about your own team and get an answer, rather than read a general article.

The common thread is that you know what you'd use it for. Paying in the hope it will make you better in general rarely works.

When it probably isn't worth it

If you only set your team once in a while, a subscription is hard to justify. The same goes if you already have a routine that works, or you mostly want live rank and price changes, which free tools handle.

It also isn't worth it if you can't tell what you're getting. A tool that talks about accuracy but shows nothing you can check is asking you to take its word for it. Each gameweek you get free transfers, and extra ones cost four points each, so a tool that nudges you into extra moves can cost you as well as help you.

What the main tools cost

Here is how the main options stood on 25 October 2026. Prices are as the companies list them.

  • Fantasy Football Scout: articles, community, podcast and data tools. The free Assistant Scout tier has key articles, news, community, basic fixture data and a team rating. Chief Scout is £3.25 a month, billed annually. An AI chat about your team isn't listed, and no accuracy figure is published.
  • Fantasy Football Hub: an AI and expert platform with AI transfers, team rating, planner and podcasts. The AI team rating is free, with an email needed. Starter is £2.49 a month, billed yearly, which is a 50%-off sale price. An AI chat isn't listed, and no accuracy figure is published.
  • FPL Review: projections, planner and transfer solver. The projection model in the planner is free. Paid access is through Patreon. There's no AI chat, and accuracy isn't published as a figure.
  • LiveFPL: live rank, leagues, price predictor, planner and ticker, all free. There's an optional subscription to remove ads. There's no AI chat, and no accuracy figure is published.
  • Fantasy Football Fix: data tools, AI transfers, ChatFPL and articles. A free account is available. Premium is £3.48 a month, billed yearly, which is a limited-time price. ChatFPL lets you chat about your team, and no accuracy figure is published.

So the free options are generous, and the paid ones are fairly close in price. The bigger difference is what each tool does for you, not what it costs.

How to check a tool before paying

Ask four plain questions. First, what do you get free, and is it enough for you? Second, what is the real price once you account for annual billing or sale pricing? Third, does the tool publish its record? Among the tools above, none publishes an accuracy figure, and FPL Review says its accuracy isn't published as a figure.

Fourth, what does it ask of you? No tool needs your FPL password to read your team, because the team ID is enough. Your team ID is the number in the web address of your Points page on the official FPL site. Be wary of anything that asks for more.

One more thing worth knowing: FPL publishes every manager's picks only after the deadline passes. Between deadlines, any tool is reading the squad FPL last locked, so don't expect it to see changes you haven't saved.

Where FFIQ fits

Fantasy Football IQ (FFIQ) is not the cheapest option here, and we won't pretend otherwise. Premium is £5.99 a month, which is the Founding Season price, 60% off the standard £14.99, or £59.99 a year. There's a first month free, a card is needed, and you can cancel any time.

It suits managers who want a move for their own team before every deadline: captain, transfers, chips and line-up, plus Ask IQ, an AI you can ask anything about your team. Every call combines 34 calculations with an algorithm that keeps updating as the scenario changes.

You can try a good deal without an account: a projection for every player six gameweeks ahead, predicted line-ups, the weekly captain and transfer calls, and a free team rater. FFIQ also publishes its record: picks made before each deadline and scored on FPL's results, misses included. It never asks for your FPL password, and a Scout member can run FFIQ alongside their Scout membership.

A sensible way to decide

Begin with the free tiers and see what you miss. If you find yourself wanting one thing in particular, such as a planner, a price predictor or a weekly captain call, pick the tool that does that thing well.

Set a limit as well. Decide what you'd be happy to spend over a season, and judge it against how much you play. If a tool doesn't change how you decide, cancel it. A small subscription you use is better value than a cheaper one you forget about.

The War Room

Now see it for your own squad.

Your account opens on the War Room with your squad: your captain, your transfers and your chips, already linked.

Questions managers ask

The questions people ask

Do I need a paid tool to do well in FPL?

No. FPL is free to play, and several tools have useful free tiers. A paid tool helps most if it saves you time or backs a decision you find hard.

Do FPL tools need my password?

No. No tool needs your FPL password to read your team, because your team ID is enough. You'll find it in the web address of your Points page on the official FPL site.

Can a tool see my team between deadlines?

Only as FPL last locked it. FPL publishes every manager's picks only after the deadline passes, so between deadlines a tool reads the squad from the previous lock.

Which FPL tool is cheapest?

Among those listed, Fantasy Football Hub's Starter is £2.49 a month, billed yearly, but that's a 50%-off sale price. LiveFPL and several others have free tiers too.

How can I tell if a tool's advice is any good?

Look for a published record that shows misses as well as hits. Among the tools listed, FFIQ says it publishes its record of picks made before each deadline and scored on FPL's results.
