Haaland Vs Watkins

Haaland Vs Watkins

Haaland's projection is a class apart — but Watkins is the one that frees up your squad.

The read. Over the next six gameweeks our model likes both forwards' schedules. Haaland's Manchester City face Bournemouth and Crystal Palace early, then Coventry at home, before the harder end of the run at Manchester United and away at Liverpool, with Sunderland at home in between. Watkins' Aston Villa open away at Brighton and host Arsenal, then get Hull away, Nottingham Forest at home, Tottenham away and Brentford at home. Neither run is a reason to sell.

The projections are where they separate. Our model has Haaland at roughly the mid-forties in points across those six weeks — comfortably the standout in the position — with Watkins somewhere in the high twenties. That is a gap of about a point and a half to two points per match, which is a lot at the sharp end of the pitch.

The nuance. The gap is not free. Haaland costs £15.5m against Watkins at £8.0m, so you are paying nearly double for roughly one and a half times the projected return. On a per-million basis Watkins is the more efficient pick, and at 12.5% ownership he is a genuine differential; Haaland, at 74.8% owned, is closer to a tax than a punt — you gain little on the field when he scores and lose a lot of rank when he doesn't. Our projections also carry more uncertainty in the back half of both runs, where the fixtures firm up (United and Liverpool for City, Tottenham away for Villa). Treat the six-week total as a direction of travel, not a promise.

FPL VERDICT. Haaland is a hold, and a captain in the opening weeks against Bournemouth and Palace, then again at home to Sunderland — the projection is high enough that armband decisions mostly start with him. If you don't own him, the question isn't whether he's good; it's whether £15.5m breaks the rest of your side.

Watkins is a buy as the funding route rather than the alternative. At £8.0m with a projected return in the high twenties and low ownership, he's a sensible route into a mid-price forward slot while you spend elsewhere. Only go Watkins-instead-of-Haaland if the money genuinely upgrades two other positions.
