Liverpool's opening six: strong on both ends, and priced accessibly in midfield

The read. Our model rates Liverpool as one of the league's three sharpest attacks and its second-meanest defence over the first six gameweeks — and it likes the schedule on both sides of the ball. Newcastle away is the awkward opener, but Nottingham Forest at home, Ipswich away, Fulham at home and Bournemouth away form a genuinely kind stretch before Manchester City visit in Gameweek 6.

Top of our preference list is Szoboszlai (£7.0m), projected for close to 30 points across the window — the best return of any Liverpool asset in our numbers, and already owned by roughly 45% of managers. Behind him, our model prefers Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) to the rest of the midfield: with clean sheets looking likely across four or five of these games, a defender in one of the league's tightest back lines at 15% ownership is the cleaner route into this team than a third or fourth attacking midfielder.

Wirtz (£7.5m) and Gakpo (£7.0m) both project well — mid-20s over six — but they sit below Szoboszlai for a reason: they're competing for the same productive minutes in the same congested midfield, and Gakpo in particular is a differential at 3.5% ownership rather than a safe starter. Alisson (£5.5m) is the value keeper here, with the same clean-sheet outlook as Van Dijk, but goalkeepers offer no upside beyond saves and shutouts.

The nuance. The fixture run is favourable, not free. Newcastle away first up and City at home last are the two games where our projections thin out, which means the bulk of the expected return is concentrated in the middle four gameweeks. That matters for timing: if you're rotating, the Forest-to-Bournemouth block is where you want these assets, not necessarily Gameweek 1 or 6. And with three midfielders projecting in the same range, doubling up carries real overlap risk — the goals get shared, and only one of them plays every week in the same role.

FPL VERDICT.

• Szoboszlai (£7.0m): buy/hold. The clearest Liverpool pick, and at 45% ownership the risk is in not having him.
• Van Dijk (£6.5m): buy. Clean-sheet potential from one of the meanest defences, still under 16% owned.
• Alisson (£5.5m): hold/watch as the cheaper way to back the same defence.
• Wirtz and Gakpo: watch. Good projections, crowded slot — wait for the minutes picture to settle.
• Captaincy: Szoboszlai in the Forest, Ipswich and Fulham weeks, not against Newcastle or City.
