And what a run it is. United face EVE (A), MCI (H), FUL (A), TOT (H), LEE (A) and BOU (H) — a genuinely kind stretch by my reckoning, with only the City home game standing out as tough. Whoever leads United's attack through that spell should eat.
My pick of the two is Fernandes, and it isn't close. He's usually good for a solid haul most weeks — around eight points a gameweek on projection — and he's the man on set pieces, penalties and pretty much everything United create. On his day he goes massive, which also makes him a live captaincy option in the better home fixtures. About 5 in 10 managers already own him, so he's template — but that cuts both ways: not owning him through this run is the real risk.
Now the honest other side. Fernandes costs £12.0m, and that's a serious chunk of any budget. Mbeumo at £8.0m is £4m cheaper and still projects for a healthy 37-plus over six — call it six points a week — with about 3 in 10 managers on board. If that £4m saving unlocks a big upgrade elsewhere in your squad, Mbeumo is a perfectly respectable route. He's not a bad player; he's just second in his own team's pecking order for FPL returns, and my numbers are clear that Fernandes is the one hoovering up United's biggest attacking moments.
But don't kid yourself that the cheaper option is the smarter one by default. Eleven projected points over six weeks is a real gap, and Fernandes has the higher weekly output *and* the bigger explosive weeks. If you can afford both, great — United's fixtures justify doubling up. If it's strictly one or the other and the money's there, this is simple.
The call: buy Fernandes. Take Mbeumo only if the £12.0m genuinely breaks your team structure — and if you land Fernandes, keep him pencilled in for the armband at home to Tottenham and Bournemouth.
