FPL Gameweek 1 Captaincy: Who To Captain
Captaincy Court, GW1: The Ceiling or The Floor?
Dead heat at the top of our projections: Bruno Fernandes and Erling Haaland both come out at 5.6 points for Gameweek 1, and both carry roughly a one-in-six shot at a proper haul. Same numbers, very different armbands — so the shortlist is Bruno at Hull, Haaland at home to Bournemouth, with Mbeumo (£8.0m, ~3 in 10 own him) and Semenyo (£8.5m, ~3 in 10) as the cheaper wildcards in the same two fixtures.
The High Line says: Bruno Fernandes. Newly promoted Hull away is exactly the fixture you want your set-piece taker, penalty taker and everything-runs-through-him midfielder in. His big week tops this whole shortlist — a 12-point day is live, and the odds of him going massive are roughly one in six, no worse than Haaland's. The difference is who's holding him: about 5 in 10 have Bruno, 7 in 10 have Haaland. Captain Bruno and haul, and you don't just keep pace — you jump the room. That's what Gameweek 1 is for. If you fancy the same game at a discount, Mbeumo's one-in-seven shot at double figures is honest value, but Bruno's the man United's attack actually runs through. Give him the band.
The Low Block says: Haaland, and it isn't close. Nailed minutes, home fixture, Bournemouth at the Etihad — this is the week you take the sure thing, not the story. The upside is identical to Bruno's: same 5.6 projected, same one-in-six haul odds, same 12-point big week. So why take the extra worry? Bruno's an away trip; Haaland's the most bankable striker in the game at home. Yes, 7 in 10 already own him — which means captaining anyone else is the real gamble, because a Haaland brace with the armband elsewhere buries your rank in week one. Semenyo in the same fixture is a fun punt at one-in-eight, but punts don't wear armbands in my team. Haaland. Boring wins leagues.
The verdict: The numbers genuinely can't split them, so this one comes down to your position. Chasing mini-league rivals or want to be different from day one? Bruno at Hull. Want to sleep on Friday night? Haaland's the template for a reason — and with identical projections and identical haul odds, we side with the safer minutes. Captain Haaland, vice Bruno.
